Meet David Freeman of Nearby Creative. He’s the VP/Strategist of the company and has been a member of Alloy 26 since September 2017. For those of you who are unfamiliar with their business, here’s some background.
Nearby Creative is a digital media agency specializing in website development and integrated marketing communications. They engineer technical business solutions, develop brands, content and marketing strategies, social media presence, online advertising, press releases, video, and more. Focusing on digital solutions, they help their clients maintain a strong online presence, which is very important in this day and age.
With getting to where he is today, David credits paying attention to a little bit of everything, asking a lot of questions, working with dozens of large and small businesses over the years, and forging cooperative personal and professional relationships. He uses his experience and insights for the good of their clients and local business community.
David and the Nearby Creative team have found strength in being surrounded by productivity in the non-isolating open-desk space of Alloy 26. His team appreciates the networking opportunities especially – in fact, Nearby Creative recently met their new Creative Director right at Alloy 26.

Q: What does a typical day look like? Can you describe what you do as if I knew nothing about it or the market?
A: It’s difficult to think of any of our days as being typical. We are connected to such a diverse range of clients and local professionals that we are always getting to work on something different. Nearby Creative is a full-service website design and development agency with a network of communication specialists located all over Pittsburgh. We have our own platform for designing, developing, and hosting custom websites. We create technical business solutions. We create brands, develop integrated marketing communication strategies, content strategies, social media campaigns, SEO, online advertisements, press releases, etc. We get to work on so many facets in our industry that it always keeps our days fresh and interesting.
Q: What has been your biggest customer success story or company success story?
A: For us, our biggest success is the relationships we’ve been able to create with our local clients and industry partners. We live nearby, so many of our clients and partners are also our neighbors. Working with them has helped us feel like a part of a community that is constantly inspiring each other to grow and improve the quality of life for each other here in the Northside, and the whole Pittsburgh area.
Q: What keeps you going when things get tough in your business?
A: The relationships we have with each other, our partners, and our clients make us feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves. We all bolster each other to get through the tough times. And while working with our clients and partners is often quite fun, we take our responsibility to helping their success very seriously. It’s not something we could ever just walk away from.
Q: What do you do when you’re not in the office?
A: Talk about work, mostly. We spend a lot of time meeting up at local businesses, with each other, our network of industry professionals, and often with our clients. We never stop brainstorming and discussing how our neighborhood is changing and growing. It’s very exciting to be a part of.
Q: What 3 things does anyone starting in your industry need to know?
A: Being part of a Startup is more of a lifestyle decision than a job. There are going to be growing pains. Be connected and be kind. As our CTO/Founder likes to say, “We’re all stuck on this ‘rock’ together. The least we can do is make life for each other as awesome as possible.”
Q: Where do you see the future of your industry?
A: Before signing with us, a lot of our customers were frustrated with their DIY sites breaking down with no one to call for help. And while freelancers can do great work, hiring one can be a gamble with no assurance they’ll be around when something needs fixed. That’s why it’s our focus to act as ‘technical partners’ with our clients. We design and build on our own platform, and we stick around for the long haul, so they never need worry about their site having problems when they need it most. If a business can’t afford a full time in-house engineering and design team, they can still have one on their side, through us. We aim to give them the peace of mind that their technical needs are handled, so they can focus on running the rest of their business.
